Compared to most of the peaks I've bagged lately I knew up front this was going to be very quick and easy, which had more to do with the oppressive weather conditions than anything else. Even waiting until late morning hoping it would burn off somewhat, the humidity was in the vicinity of 70% when I began the hike. So after just .3 mile and 350' elevation gain I was thoroughly drenched, but thankful for the nice breeze across the ridge of the peak.

With so much flat ground for miles in each direction there wasn't much of interest close-up so most of my photos of the surrounding area I used the zoom. While on summit end of the ridge I heard a loud screech right as a shadow passed over me, causing me to instinctively duck. :o
After scanning around I saw a red-tailed hawk wheeling around up-sun from me, screeching constantly. It didn't take but a moment to realize it was likely there was a nest nearby and it was warning me away. Since it hadn't bothered me before reaching the summit I figured the nest was near there. So, not wishing to cause any more alarm I headed south along the ridge until the screeching stopped.

But now there were more shadows passing over me... a group of 4 turkey vultures seemingly waiting impatiently for me to succumb to the weather, I suppose. A few times they were within 10' above me as they wheeled by. Eventually, as I'm carefully watching my footing while traversing the rocky terrain, their constant shadows passing over me was enough to rattle me a bit. Yes, I know it was irrational, but just the same, it bothered me to the point as the next one approached I threw a rock well up above one so (hopefully) it would drop down on or near it to scare it away. Surprisingly the rock passed within inches of the vulture and as it wheeled to avoid the rock it almost flew into a rock outcrop. And when the rock hit the ground with a solid crack, sounding much like a gunshot :gun: the whole group of vultures dispersed quick as you please. Hmmm, I'll have to remember that.

Ok, enough playing with birds... time for a few more photos, especially a few close-ups of North Butte as that is on my peak list. The last few photos and I'm heading back down to the car to finish my trip through Box Canyon, doing a recon of three upcoming peaks I'll climb along the way... when it isn't quite so humid, of course.
