Since I was unable to drive very far south before climbing Peak 4020, the extra distance to my planned #4 climb for today (Ajax Benchmark) would make it a stretch. Also, after getting a better look at it from my last two climbs it appears to present enough difficulty that I'll save it for a 2-peak day, if not just by itself.

So, I settled on my fall-back option, Peak 3540 along Telegraph Canyon Road. But retracing my route would again be time-consuming... even though the last 3 miles was a bit better, it still took 45 minutes to go 3.5 miles.

As steep as the east slope of Peak 3540 appeared on my previous climbs in the area, the approach from the Arizona Trail looked good. Except I didn't feel like hiking the extra 3/4 mile each way from where the AZT crossed the road. I figured by approaching in the wash around the southern base of 3540 would be easy enough, which it was.

I did connect with the Arizona Trail for about 20' before beginning my climb to the summit. Barely 25 minutes and I'm at the summit. I shot another 2-1/2 minute 360 pan video and a number of photos before beginning the descent. Initially I was going to return along my ascent route but now that my vehicle was in my line of sight I thought I'd descend a little bit and see just how steep it was. If I had to climb back up, at least the upper part was now in the shade.

It was the steepest terrain I'd encountered all day, but by now I might as well continue. Only to hit even steeper terrain... so steep I was reduced to all fours backing down the slope. When I tried to go through a section of loose rock across the slope it was, here-we-go-again, another nice rock slide. Once it settled down I decided to stay away and continue straight down, staying in the center of a very narrow drainage. Finally I was on level ground and only had a short walk along Telegraph Canyon Road to the car.

Whew! With four summits today I'm up to 9 of the 23 300' prominence peaks in the Mineral Mountain Quadrangle.

Only 16 photos on this climb so I posted all on HAZ as well as my own web site:
