| partners | | I was just out here doing some heavy duty 4x4 recon the day before, but seeing a storm headed into the east valley I took a quick look at the Weather-in-motion radar and confirmed heavy rain had just moved through the Rawhide Canyon area and was headed toward Mesa. I figured it would provide an opportunity to see the area right after a storm, a good possibility of some great sunset photos, and possibly see some wildlife after sunset.
So the moment Tracey got home we were on our way... in the Pathfinder of course, as she wanted the luxury of real cold A/C. No worries, as long as we stuck to Forest Road 2466 we would do just fine. As it turned out we encountered puddles all along the trip, but due to the rocky base of the road there was very little mud to speak of and thus no slipping and sliding, even on the steep hills.
With the Pathfinder being so much bigger than the Samurai, even willing to gather another batch of Arizona pinstripes we didn't get quite all the way to the end of FR2466 so we had to do a little boulder-hopping before locating a nice vantage point for the upcoming sunset. It wasn't quite so easy for Tracey who still had her flip-flops on.
We had made good time so didn't have to wait long. Everything was blocked by clouds except for two small bands of clear sky just above the horizon so we had two windows-of-opportunity for photos. I only took a few photos of the sunset itself, choosing to focus on the reflections off the mountains and ridges to the east, turning orange as the sun dropped lower.
I posted 15 photos on HAZ, the full set of 26 photos is here:

We only saw cows, one rabbit and a hawk of some kind, so observing wildlife part didn't pan out. Oh well, it was still great to experience the refreshing clear air right after a heavy rain. And now that Tracey got a chance to see the area first-hand, we will definitely be back later in the year for some serious hiking. |
