I ALWAYS check hikearizona before I hike anything, but it didn't really occur to me to join and log my own trips. Well, here we go!
This was my third (second successful) attempt at Humphreys.
The best advice I can give is especially if you live around Phoenix, camp the night before. It definitely helps acclimate you to the altitude. My first attempt was unsuccessful due to altitude sickness. There is great dispersed camping off Snow Bowl Road and FR 522 at Freidlein Prairie.
Also, take it slow and steady. I think that helps with the altitude, too. The beginning of the trail is deceptively easy and you definitely do not want to burn through all of your energy before you hit the tree line.
Another bonus to taking it slow and steady: If your legs aren't all tired and wobbly on the way down, it makes the descent much less treacherous.
This third trip was very enjoyable. I started the trail with a finnicky knee issue and a tweaked ankle, so I had to take caution with each step to avoid "real", show-stopping injury. Since I had reached the peak before, my motivation was pretty low. A shot of GU made me take the last leg of the summit much more enthusiastically:) |
