They were collecting for the upcoming winter. They'd knock down a bunch of pine cones and then run around collecting them one at a time. In some cases the cones were larger than their heads. During breakfast we were amused by the squirrels running the cones back to their caches and the chipmunks romping around.
After a leisurely morning we headed out for a wander near Clear Lake. We saw what was left of the dam. Mostly it had been rocks piled strategically but there had also been some wooden structure to it. The wooden structure had been destroyed over the years and downfall had filled in.
We found the spot where some of our party had camped 5 or 6 years ago. It was a nice area with lots of rocks to hang out on. It also had nice view of Clear Lake, Haystack, Mitchell, and Warbonnet.
We then took a faint route over to Rapid Lake where three of us went swimming. Karl and I found a rock off a little island to do cannonballs and dive. It was cold yet refreshing! Then we had our lunch and enjoyed the sun.
The clouds started to roll in which meant that it took longer an it should have to dry my pants. Yes, I swam in my pants (it was laundry day and they were dirty)!
We started back over to Clear lake but got distracted along the way by the view over Big Sandy Lake and Warbonnet and Mitchell. Then Karl, Kathy, Joel, and I decided to walk around Clear Lake to see if we could find some Moose. We did see some prints in the mud and some poop. But no Moose...
On the way back to camp it started to rain. I used my umbrella instead of digging out my rain gear. Two of our campers packed up to get a head start on their drive. One of them had a plane to catch from Vegas to Fresno. We said our goodbyes on the trail and I continued back to camp. At camp, I crawled in the tent to keep warm. I managed to read a few chapters before the rain had moved on. Then, we made tea and did some chores.
We hung around the big rock in camp chatting until dinner time. After dinner we made our plans for the next day. Three of us Plan to do Mitchell Peak, two will hike out, two go to Lonesome Lake, and two be lazy.
It was early when we crawled in bed. I got prepared for a cold night compared to the other nights this week. |
