The Tucson Backpacking meetup organized a trip on the Colorado through Desert River Outfitters. We launched right below Hoover Dam. It was an awesome view of the dam. Along the way we stopped our canoes and checked out some hot springs, beaches, canyons, and caves. We also hiked Boy Scout Canyon which I'll put under a different triplog.
We spent the night near Arizona Hot Springs (Ringbolt). Even though it was very warm out we still enjoyed the hot springs. The canyon the hot springs is very narrow and the colors are beautiful.
The second day we found that while we were going downstream we actually had to paddle else we didn't go anywhere! The headwinds and currents were keeping us in place. My upper body's pretty sore today due to the unusual workout.
The Emerald Cave is pretty cool. The light coming into the cave highlights the green vegetation under the water and makes it a brilliant green color.
I did get to see some big horn sheep, but not until the very end of the trip where the most people were. Silly sheep, you are supposed to be out in the wild!
Note, this canoe trip is one of the 31 items on the list of things to do before you kick the bucket in Arizona Highways last month. They had the Emerald Cave as the feature for that trip. I definitely agree that everyone who loves Arizona should do this trip! |
