| no partners | | so it's been a while since i've done any hikes over 3,000 feet. well, all summer, as a matter of fact. and i'm supposed to be hiking in the grand canyon in a couple of months!? well, i better get hiking! the original plan was to hike up old baldy trail for as far as i could, possibly to the peak. after about two miles and two hours in, my legs were hurting when i took a break at josephine saddle and re-assessed. i got it in my head about then that i could go on the super trail and do josephine peak (i haven't been there!). since the super trail is a mellower grade, i wouldn't hurt as much. that was the plan.
when i arrived at the turnoff to josephine peak, i took one look at her and decided that she would have to wait for another day. it looked to be too much of a climb to get to the top (and does anyone have a route for this?). then, i climbed just as much vertically and distance-wise to get to baldy saddle. a headache was sinking in, and i talked myself out of a peak-bag because i was running out of daylight. with an average speed uphill of one mile and hour, and an average speed downhill at 2.5 miles per hour, it would still be close to 7 by the time i reached the parking lot. so... i didn't get on top of wrightson this time, but i lassoed clear around her (all the way down old baldy trail) for my first major mileage and distance since memorial day weekend. |
