| partners | | decided to break in my new boots , and remember how hiking felt with a full backpack. turns out it's heavy. southpawaz (bobby) decided to hike with me out there. i was grateful for the company (and the shade when i decided to break where there was none), but embarrassed that i didn't do so well with the heavy pack. after he left, i headed up the trail a little more to get away from the throngs of folks who hike this trail - i didn't want them to wake me up in the morning, either.
i was so tired that i was inside my tent asleep scaring away the bears even before backpacker's midnight , so wouldn't you know it i was wide awake at 1:30 a.m. i got up, found some tequila hidden in my pack, and watched the stars. i saw a couple of streaks of the orionid meteor shower, or perhaps that was the hornitos obscuring my view. i finally made it back to sleep a couple of hours later so i could get up at a reasonable daylight hour (6:30).
uneventful hike out. i need to do a couple more backpacking trips to be ready for the grand canyon next month. |
