The plan was ambitious... 5 peaks in one ~10 mile loop and about 2000' AEG. It was a good thing I cut the loop short after three summits as it was much more of a challenge than I expected. Although I stuck reasonably close to my mapped-out route there was a lot of up-and-down that the Route Manager didn't take into account and I ended up with over 2800' AEG, even skipping the last two peaks... wouldn't you know it, probably the easiest ones.

I had a nice path to for the first 150' before the bushwhacking and steep climbing began. Although only in the low 70's for temp, an hour, a mile and 1070' later I reached the summit of Peak 3906 thoroughly soaked in sweat. I took a good 15-minute break cool off and dry out what I could before heading off to peak 2.

I followed a ridge up-and-down on the way to Peak 3826 then a steep drop down and back up to the summit. Again I'm soaked through and take another 15-minute break before continuing on to peak 3.

Immediately I had a steep descent followed by a long milder slope where I scanned the next objective for the best route up. My planned route was too steep so I settled for longer route that added an extra 1/4 mile but was a bit easier. Even though this peak was by far the easiest of the bunch, my energy level was dropping fast so I decided to skip the last two peaks.

But because this was an almost circular loop it wasn't just a matter of taking a beeline back to the TH, it would take more climbing and a wide arc before connecting with end of my planned loop. After the last bit of climbing I took a break to remove my wet socks, dry my feet and put on a dry pair. Ahhhh, that felt good!

Although the last few miles were following a single-track motorcycle trail, much of it was trudging through loose sandy pebbles so what little energy I had left was used up fast. I had taken twice as much fluid as my previous 4-peak Little Granite Loop hike (about the same distance traveled) but I ran out a mile from the TH so I knew this was a much tougher hike than last Saturday.

I didn't realize it until I got home but I took over a hundred photos so I'll break them up into smaller photosets here on HAZ. I posted 100 on my web site here:
