We drove to the end point and dropped a vehicle on FR 418 and then headed to Schultz Pass for the beginning. The snow from Friday's storm had melted fast so very little snow in the first 8 miles of 19 miles. The trail traverses through the ponderosa's contouring the base of peaks. Eventually making it's way to where the trail crosses Snowbowl road at 7.4 miles. From here the trail starts to go up and begins the climb that gains most of the 2200 feet AEG for the day. Within the first 2 miles of the climb the snow begins to show up making the climb a bit tougher. Snow continued to get thicker as the trail climbs from about 7500 feet to just over 9000 feet top out near the Snowbowl parking lot. Despite slogging through the snow this was by far the highlight of the trip. Awesome views of the peaks and snow covered meadows as the trail contoured 9000 feet for several miles. At about 15 miles the trail started to drop gradually and the snow again began to disappear. And just to top off the day right at the end there was a great stand of mature aspens in the last mile before reaching the vehicle. Great hike....definitely will be returning to this area for another look! |
