It appears that alot of benchmarks in Arizona were monumented right after the urgency of WWII was over, while our government began getting back to more domestic business and priorities.
My planning for this hike had as much to do with getting the car as close as possible to the correct mountain, without getting lost on a multitude of dirt roads.
In 1946 the surveyors left Superior and drove west on original 2-lane Rte 60, then north on many ranch roads. They then "packed" northeast for 35 minutes to reach the spot they wanted to survey from. The area was already known as Millsite, so they named the triangulation benchmark the same.
Since there are no trails anywhere, I also "packed" northeast up this mountain to get to the benchmark location. The bushwhack up to the top was rather easy, as the ascent angle was not severe. I was rewarded with excellent views in all directions, with especially good views of Roblas Butte, Pickettpost Mountain, Dromedary Peak, and in the distance, the Superstition Mountains.
With the aid of my GPS, I easily found the MILLSITE Triangulation Benchmark and, after referring to the surveyor's datasheet, I found MILLSITE's one and only Reference Mark (#1). I had already found MILLSITE's Azimuth mark on an earlier hike. The surveyors used an already established benchmark for MILLSITE's Azimuth mark. (Dromedary Triangulation Benchmark, 5.6 miles south)
I took many photos of the benchmark and the surrounding area, made some measurements, signed the summit log (hiding under a pile of rocks), then hiked back down to my home-made trailhead.
All in all a successful hike and successful benchmark find. |
