| no partners | | We started at Fountain Hill's Golden Eagle Trailhead, on Golden Eagle Blvd, located just prior to a gated community. From the lot you walk past the guard house of the gated community, and follow "side walk directions" to the actual Dixie Mine trailhead.
Dixie Mine trail is in the McDowell Mountain Regional Park (bring $2 for the lock-box).
Part way down the Dixie Mine trail, it intersects with the Sonoran Trail. Take the Sonoran Trail.
Soon you'll officially be in the Fountain Hills portion of the McDowell trail system, and from the Sonoran Trail you'll be able to access all of the FH trails.
We hiked all the named trails, except one. From the Western Loop Trail we also hiked out on a new, yet-to-be-named trail that will eventually connect with Scottsdale's Sunrise trail. When that connection is completed, I can see all kinds of "loop-hikes" becoming possible.
We had the threat of rain for most of the hike, but it never happened. The clouds, however were indicative of a summer day in the midwest, giving us all kinds of partial shadows on the mountains, and made for unique views all around.
We saw one lonely deer casually looking for his lunch. He sauntered over a ridgeline just before we did, but we never saw him again. How do they do that?
With the threat of rain all day, we saw no one on the trails. We owned the place for the day. |
