| no partners | | I had low expectations for this hike and I’m glad I was wrong! I was looking for an another way back to the Bartlett dam and beyond.
I started at the Log Corral TH and headed in. The trail starts off in a maze of intersecting spur trails that cross the Sycamore creek about 4 times. I followed the main set of tracks and keep an eye on the GPS.
Soon the trail goes into a narrow canyon with flowing water and trees. The trees made the trail more narrow. About a mile in, the trail comes out of the canyon and it’s in a sandy wash within the desert. The wash was packed down, so the hiking wasn't impacted. I figured this section was going to be slow moving with my boot sinking in loose sand. The scenery gets monotonous after a while, until I hit the Granite mountain pass. Then I got a view of the lake. Soon after I hit the Log Corral cabin/homestead. The remains the cabin looked too nice to be a cabin. The place had running water, frig and a shower! Plus a great view of the lake (or the Verde River before the lake was made).
I went past a couple of fence lines and corrals before hitting the lake. This time I had plenty of time to explore past the dam and beyond ! It was cool seeing the spillway up-close and behind the dam. I made it the end of the SR393. My GPS showed a fording point there, but I couldn't find it. Or maybe nature took it back. I was able to explore off-trail down the Verde before hitting a wall of vegetation. On the way back I checkout other spur trails/washes and found a fording point on the Verde, but I couldn't see where to come out on the other side.
The hike out got very chilly once I got by the water. I’ll definitely return to the area. |
