| no partners | | This was probably the most eye-opening hike I have attempted. The plan was to visit the pools but I didn’t make it. It does hurt my fragile male ego to admit defeat but lessons well learned.
The hike starts off fairly moderate lots of climbing over rocks and general trail hiking. That was until I reached this wall that looked like a straight drop off at first. Pictures do not do it justice. Since I am a noob it looked enormous. After looking over the edge for a moment you can see the area you can climb down fairly easily.
There is a small little pool shortly after that is filled with lots of fish. It’s a shuffle to get around it and I found the easy way when I was heading back.
After that I enter this forest of green that appears to be poison ivy. It’s perfect because I’m wearing running shorts and a T-shirt. For some reason I choose to follow the left side of the canyon. After a while it becomes a thick wall of brush with a few scattered monster boulders in the path. I zigzag back and forth trying to follow the stream and find a path. I wasn’t sure what was burning my legs the whole time but it kept me motivated.
Finally I find a small path on the right and all I can think of is the scene from the Goonies “Stay to the right!” For some reason I kept wandering to the left (east) wanting to be near the water. After a few slips and falls I shimmy down a tree. I can hear more and more water so I felt like I was getting closer. Eventually I get to this big open area with a very narrow waterfall and pool. I decide to check my GPS (iPhone) and the phone will not turn on it’s displaying a huge caution sign that says something about over heating. I then go to take a drink of water from my bladder and its empty. I walk around this area for a little bit looking for a way to get down. I look at the miles traveled on my watch and realize I am only probably half way there. I get that gut feeling to go back. In the past I have ignored that feeling and its gotten me into a few jams.
I decided to head back to my car, but in the end I am extremely happy to have started the journey and I can’t wait to go back in the near future more motivated |
