This was my first official hike of the summer. I have been wanting to do this out and back trip for a while. Im glad I did and didn't wait to get an overnight camp site pass. This is the precursor hike for me to the Kaibab to Phantom Ranch to Bright Angel day hike I want to do this year. The views in the canyon are awesome and a totally different experience from the two dozens times I had seen the canyon from the top. I decided to leave the night before to avoid the drive in the morning, I ran into some elk on the way into Tusayan. I ended up camping right outside of town on FR302, lots of camping spots and other campers. I wanted to get a semi early start, unluckily I got stuck behind the mule train, but it was fine in the end they went faster than I was going. The hike was awesome, and the creek was flowing at the bottom. The day use picnic are was pretty much empty, I wish I would have stayed longer. The hike felt long and hot, luckily some clouds rolled in and gave me a light drizzle 2/3 from the top. I really enjoyed this trail, it was challenging, and the full sun exposure would have been miserable without a sun umbrella. I plan to do it again in the near future, and cant wait. This hike is not recommended by the forest service according to the signs posted.
