After a plane flight to Vegas, Karen and I drove to Parawan, Utah, where we had dinner in a diner right out of a Norman Rockwell painting. We rose before dawn to drive up to Brian Head and Cedar Breaks, where we shivered and watched the sun come up. :D
From there we headed to Bryce Canyon National Park and checked out the awesome lodge and cabins designed by Gilbert Stanley Underwood from 1924. The National Park Service rustic design is so perfect for the setting, massive and rough but comfortable. We enjoyed our cabin, then rose again early to hike the Navajo/Queen's Garden loop, having the trail to ourselves almost the entire time. We descended into the hoodoos from Sunset Point in the morning twilight and silence, not speaking a word. It felt like being in some kind of church, with spires rising all around. It's not a very big park, but the density of the wild geology is incredible. Dakota Sandstone and Tropic Shale eroded and glowing in every direction. Connecting to the Queen's Garden Trail, we worked our way back up to Sunrise Point, then along the Rim Trail back to our starting point. A smooth trail that is steep at times, with plenty of shade and photo ops. A great start to our trip, now it's on to Zion! :y:
