We would check out Weeping Rock first, a cool overhang only .5 miles in draped in moss and ferns with a constant wall of dripping water forming a curtain at it's edge. Standing underneath it looked (and sounded) like it was raining outside. Soon a large group arrived so we headed back down to the Hidden Canyon Trail that branches off the Weeping Rock Trail near the trailhead.
Hidden Canyon itself was found in 1927 when William Evans attempted to climb the Great White Throne, Zion's most famous landmark, and fell during the climb. While searching for Evans, who was miraculously found alive, rescuers discovered the hidden ravine that is now known as Hidden Canyon. The trail climbs steeply, and though not as exposed as the Hogsback on the Angels Landing Trail, sections would get chains years after we did this hike due to it's rugged nature. At about the 1.1 mile point we reached the entrance to Hidden Canyon, but Karen declined at this point. The Narrows had taken their toll on her tootsies, and the scrambling ahead looked like more work than fun. She wished me luck and said be back in an hour, so I set my watch and headed in.
There was supposed to be a 20 foot arch .5 miles in, but I don't think I got that far before having to turn around. There were so many wild and intricate formations in the sandstone, I couldn't decide how to spend my last roll of 35mm film. Keeping my promise, I exited the canyon on time and we headed back down.
Another great trip with great weather and spectacular scenery. Bit by bit, I was convincing my Michigan Girl to follow me out west where I knew we belonged. |
