After a good nights sleep at the best motel in the world*, Karen and I entered Zion.
Originally christened Mukuntuweap National Monument (I'm not kidding) in 1909, Zion was renamed in 1918 when it was decided people might not want to go to places with "foreign" or hard to pronounce names. Zion means "refuge" in Hebrew, and is a reference to the Mormon pioneers who settled in the area around 1858.
We decided on the Emerald Pools Trail to start, a fairly easy hike that led to three sets of pools formed by a small stream cascading down the slope. The trail was smooth and easy to follow, and each set of pools was better than the last. The early morning was quiet, save for the sound of the tiny falls, and once again we had the trail to ourselves until we headed back down. There are benefits to being early birds.
From there we went to the IMAX theater, which had a film that included a Zion climbing sequence and protected fall that completely blew us away. I don't know if it's still available, but I would love to see it again.

*Zion Canyon Lodge - At the time the rooms were cheap, tiny, and clean. Incredible views from the sparkling pool and a top-of-the-line fiberglass hot tub. :D

It was tense.
