I find it kinna odd that they make a new side road to go around fallen trees, rather than just bring out a chainsaw and cut it up. Well I finally make it to the TH and the short hike to the bottom. For my first time in WCC, I decided to go upstream based on previous photo albums of the area. I probably got about 3 miles upstream before turning back. This section was very scenic, secluded, and extremely enjoyable. Be prepared to get wet if you venture up or down the creek. There's many swimming holes, slippery moss-covered rocks abound, a few bush waking sections, and hundreds of crawdads. I highly recommend a shorty wetsuit even in the summer, a dry bag or keg, durable pack with drainholes, nalgene bottles instead of a hydration bladder, and a waterproof camera. It also helps if you've perfected the art of falling while navigating creeks. I probably did over a dozen slips, splits, and falls. But I don't have a scratch or bruise on me to prove it.
On a side note, on my drive in on 142B I ran into a struggling group of Boy Scouts who were waiting for their shuttle and were almost out of water. They dropped in on Tramway and backpacked down to Calloway and stayed the night on the rim. It makes me wonder how they ran out of water. Did not a single one of them have a filter on a creek spelunking overnighter? Or were they just too tired to hike down to the creek? Anyways, I always carry extra water and gave them one of my gallon jugs. |
