| partners | | I sent JohnLP a text early this morning to see if he was hiking or biking today. He told me to check out the route he had put together in route manager. It looked good and turned out to be even better than expected.
We headed out and were on the trail around 10a.m. For the first four miles we followed an old road thru the desert leading to the base of our high point target. As we neared the end of the road we found the remains of an old abandoned mine and the miners camp. Pretty cool!
Then we headed up the ridge to the high point of the Maricopa Mountains. At the Peak we found a register. We spent some time looking at the entries. We spotted three fellow HAZers. The oldest HAZ entry being nearly 17 years ago. Very cool!
Then we decided to go check out the intriguing Hoo Doos at the end of the upper ridge. On our way over we saw lots of evidence of Big Horn Sheep. At the Hoo Doos we did a scramble to the top of the middle section. It was windy up there but the views and the feeling was like being on top of the world. Super cool!
From there we made our way down the side of the mountain and across the desert floor. The Saguaros and Cholla were scattered about and made for cautious obstacles. Along the way we would find several old relics and one "Radiosonde" which is a device used on weather balloons. We didn't know what it was at first but found it intriguing.
In no time we were back at the Jeep and heading home. I must say this hike turned out to be Far Cooler than expected.
Good one LP! |
