| no partners | | Nick and I hiked a section of the Grand Enchantment Trail that leads to the western end of Aravaipa the other day.
Along the way we passed Brandenburg Mountain. I have seen it towering above on previous trips to the area as well. It is unmistakable with it's Grand Canyon like layers protruding off the southern side. To see it from below on the way in to Aravaipa Wilderness one would think it would be impossible to summit. When we hiked that GET section it made me want to give it a try and today would be the day.
I parked at the Brandenburg Ranger Station Trailhead and walked the road back to the drainage where we came down before. Up I went and connected with an old Jeep road. I followed the Jeep road until I could see a good spot to start my trek up the side of the mountain. It is steep and rocky but manageable. (I also plotted it out in route manager prior to going). Once up top the views were jaw dropping. I wish photos could do it justice but they simply don't.
There was a summit register and it would appear that this is a favorite for the SAHC (Southern Arizona Hiking Club) as they had several entries. I represented HAZ strong as always with my "HAZ Rocks" quote! Then it was down the other side I went. The old jeep road follows around for quite a ways. I made a track to the tank that was on the topo.
Once at the tank I decided to go a little further up the road to the next high point. To be honest I could have just kept going but wasn't sure where I would end up. Now that I am back and have had a chance to study the map a little more it looks like I could have made a nice 10 mile loop.
I think I may just have to go back sometime soon and do the loop. One thing is for sure, the views of the surrounding area will make it a worthwhile trip. |
