| partners | | We went to a canyon near Zion called Yankee Doodle. It's typically used as a training canyon and has a 70 foot rappel plus a lot of friction down climbs where you stem, chimney, and bridge. The highlight was just being in a slot canyon imagining it filled with rushing water carving out the walls as we see them today.
Towards the end while we waited on another party we build a deadman's anchor and practiced loading it carefully by belaying the climber down until the load was in the anchor and then backing it up with meat in case it failed. Except the last person had to go over the edge without the meat backup. The smallest person usually has to be the "last man at risk" and go without the meat back-up. Since I'm the smallest in my usual canyoneering group, I tried the rappel without the meat back-up and found that the dead-man we had created was bomber! We were mostly pretending because the 15 foot drop could be negotiated without a rope however, when you're hanging off a deadman it doesn't matter if it's 15 feet or a lot more the risk is still high!
The way out was a big slab with some new moki steps dug in.
What a fun canyon! |
