We continued a bit past where most people go into the canyon and did a bit of rock hopping. Then we got to the rocks where we suited up. The water felt great with our wetsuits on. Two people didn't bring wetsuits and they didn't seem to be as happy as those of us with them.
I had made arrangements with Mitch, the Sierra Club leader, to go on ahead with the fast group and set up a rope. Instead of breaking into two distinct groups we ended up just stretched out which was fine.
At the rappel we ran into a bottleneck as one group was going and another group was waiting. We had our lunch while we waited which was nice. While we were there some dude from another party slipped or something and went down the slide rappel without being rigged. Lucky for him he ended up OK. Made me think about the accident a few weeks ago.
I blew up my pool float and got ready to rappel. Joel and I headed out on the traverse first. I was happy to have my safety tether. Joel rigged the rope using his Totem so that it would be releasable in case someone had problems. Then I went down the rappel. I choose to go where everyone had been jumping because I figured I'd probably get some free hanging... It was pretty cool. Joel stayed up and helped everyone since there were a lot of beginners who had never even practiced rappeling before (at least that is what it seemed like having not arranged the trip and not knowing anyone's history). A couple guys jumped in. I hung out at the bottom giving fireman's belays.
We then floated through the last section of the canyon. I was very happy to be in my pool float again!
The hike out was pretty warm but there was a breeze so it was tolerable.
What an extremely beautiful place! I may never go back due to the lack of solitude, but I will always remember the fun time I had and the beauty of the canyon. |
