| partners | | We decided to take on Parker Canyon on the same weekend we planned to do Salome Jug with a campout in between. That was a great decision!
The road to the parking spot for Parker was eroded and at least a Subaru Outback is required (and a good driver).
We arrived and found another party ahead of us. A guide and two clients. He gave us a couple hints regarding poison ivy and they were off. The hike down into the canyon is basically a poison ivy minefield. Some of the plants were absolutely enormous, so much for frost freeze backs... We backtracked and then down climbed close to the old gauge station (at least that is what I thought it was) to avoid exposure.
The first rappel was short and off a deadmans anchor into a pool. Typically I'd go last off sketchy anchors but Joel had tugged on it and it seemed almost bomber. So I went first to test the water. Brrr! It was cold! Glad I had my shorty on!
Next came a couple of slides! Fun!
We made a point of practicing the riggings we had learned in the workshop we attended. For the second rappel I rigged a releasable Munter mule under the chockstone. I definitely need to practice more as it took me a few minutes to set! But we didn't care about the time, it was hot outside of the canyon so we might as well make the most of the nice cool canyon!
The forth rappel Joel set a releasable and reminded me to pay attention since I was first. Right below the start was a couple bunches of Columbines! Beautiful. I looked down and saw that Joel had purposely thrown short. So I locked off and shouted to him to lower me. Once the rope touched the water he held me on belay as I finished rappelling.
The last rappel was the longest at about 80 feet. The top has a great view of Roosevelt Lake framed by the cliffs. For me, it's weird to see a lake. This rappel is a fun one! At the bottom we practiced ascending. I used a GriGri and a Croll. Practice, practice, practice!
We then picked our way along the poison ivy lined path to the exit route. It's a steep climb requiring a lot of scrambling. We were treated to a rattlesnake as we climbed!
We then made our way back to the car enduring the heat of the desert. Due to the heat, we choose to camp under trees next to the creek instead of finding on of the spots with a nice view of the lake and 4 peaks.
I'll edit my mileage once I fix up my tracklog... |
