My bestest PA hiking buddy Dodson and I began our 9+ mile loop from the Hamburg Reservoir trailhead just north of Interstate 78 and east of State Route 61. The parking area is well marked, has plenty of parking, and even a brand new porta potty. The trail begins on a dirt access road and shortly turns into a delicious and rugged white blazed trail known to be that of the Appalachian variety. A steep and rocky ascent turns to follow the ridgeline to the eastern most point of the mountain, The Pinnacle. Breathtaking views of the farm lands below and raptors circling above highlight the loop and give reason to stay longer than I normally would. Returning via the access road takes you to the beautiful Hamburg reservoir, a blue mountain lake surrounded by tall swaying green grass and woody oak trees. From the reservoir, it's a short hike back to the parking lot. We couldn't have had better weather on this first day of June. |
