I drove to the TH from Russell Rd and I think it'd be easier finding the TH if you did a straight shot up Icehouse Canyon Rd. When I got to the TH there was a dozen cows at the picnic area and they left me many 'presents'. This trail is on the far eastside of the parking lot and is fairly easy to follow with signs indicating the way when cross another road/trail. It was quite chilly hiking this in December, but I did encounter a few other at the TH and on the FRs. This was a good time for me to test all those additional layers I bring for cold weather. The uphill climb is fairly gentle, but I often had to stop to adjust layers or just take off my jacket and let my shirt dry off a bit. It amuses me that it can be 30-40° outside and I'm wearing two thin layers, but I'm still sweating up a storm on the uphill. Fortunately I brought additional shirts that could be used as base layers or else I would have froze on top and the way down.

The trail passes thru many scenic and different sections as you climb to the top. From manzanita groves to pine to aspens and oaks. Saw a few deer and a family of ringtails that played hide-and-seek alongside the trail. Many of the pools in the canyons/creeks had a layer of ice on the top and trace amount of snow was encountered above 6000 ft. Once on top amongst the towers there were sweeping views, but the wind was howling and it was chilly even with all my remaining dry layers on.

I ended up hiking up Six Shooter, past the Spring, up the FRs to the summit and the many arrays of radio towers, then back down past the spring, went down Telephone Trail to the mining camp, and must have missed the sign to continue on Telephone because I accidently ended up on Icehouse Canyon for 1-2 miles before finally making it back to the car a bit before sunset. :D
