I planned a hike to the top of Deception Peak a long time ago. 8 years ago my wife and I hiked to Nambe Lake. I wanted to hike Deception Peak, but the thunderstorms started early that day, so we stayed lower. We started out today about 10 AM. That's a little late, but it was nice and sunny with only a few clouds. By the time we made the summit, a little before 12:30 PM the clouds were getting pretty thick.

Along the way up we ran into a boulder field. I read about this in a hike description posted on the internet. As I scanned the boulders I saw lots of Rocky Mountain Columbine. I took a tougher way up through the boulders to photograph the columbine. My wife and son took the easier way.

We summited and I shot lots of photos. There were good vistas in all directions. While taking photos a marmot shot up a crevice right next to me and posed for me. I never thought I would get that close to one.

Shortly after we summited, we heard thunder. It was time to get off the mountain. Shortly after we starter heading down the thunder was more frequent and then came the rain. It rained on us most of the way down the mountain. I continued to shoot a few photos on the way down, but when my lens started fogging up due to the rain, it was time to put the camera away.

On our drive back to Santa Fe we had to stop because of a bad accident. A pickup truck lost control and crashed into a rock cliff and burst into flames. The truck apparently hit an oncoming car and it burned up as well. As thick as the forest is at the crash site, it’s a small wonder that the accident didn’t start a forest fire. After sitting there for a half hour, the police let us through. Cars heading up the mountain weren’t so lucky. They ran into a “Road Closed” sign.
