| no partners | | I parked at the Gentry Lookout tower/campgrounds and hiked down the General Crook trail to FR110/IR33.
My goal was to see the Chediski lookout tower / peak.
I saw a coyote (not the ice skating variety) almost as soon as I started down FR110. I did side trips to the Wildhorse Lake / Campgrounds, Chuck Box Lake and Chuck Box Fire station.
IR33 has a lot of views of the Apache Rez. I think I had some views of the Cibecue area.
The Chediski lookout tower was closed for the season. I’ve never seen any of the Apache / Sitgreaves LO towers manned. Maybe monsoon season is the “closed” season for them. I search around for the summit marker on the Chediski peak, but couldn’t find it. My GPS showed that the LO tower was the highest point. I continued down on IR33 enjoying the views before returning.
On the way out I saw a sign for the Chuck Box and went down the road hoping to get a tasty burger, but found a dilapidated building. While I ate lunch it bugged me about the Chuck Box fire station. I pulled out the map and confirmed that I was in the right area (the GPS confirmed it). On the way back I scoured the area looking for the fire station. The only thing I found was the dilapidated building . I then found the Chuck Box lake
My expectations for the hike to the tower was low. I was surprised at the views and the amount of things to see along the way.
The day started out cloudy. It sprinkle on me before the clouds lifted and sun came out. It was warm, but it was nice not hiking in the rain.
It was a fun hike with unexpected views and things to discover. I’ll return again to explore around some more. |
