| no partners | | I awoke to some less-than-inviting clouds in Ophir on Friday morning so I drove out to Stansbury Island to look for petroglyphs instead. That didn't work out, so I drove out to West Valley City for some Mexican food before returning to Ophir once again for Flat Top Mountain. Saturday promised sunny skies so it was foolproof. I had some dinner, got my pack ready, and hit the hay in the crowded campground. Woke up the next morning, had some cereal, and I was on my way to the highpoint of the Oquirrh Mountains.
I parked at the relatively new trailhead and started my two mile road walk to the saddle at 8,060ft. Next was another road heading east that meets with a trail. The trail was in good shape, despite having a lot of overhanging vegetation in spots. This trail leads to another saddle with a cairn marking the next trail to take. This trail was in excellent condition. Very easy to follow. It spit me out at yet another saddle under Lewiston Peak. Near this saddle was a sign stating I would be trespassing...
Henceforth, I contoured along some really crappy terrain that was open in places, likely from other travelers, or possibly game. I found more of a trail (the one I was supposed to be on during the contour session) near the north end of Lewiston, and from there, it was fairly well defined trail over the ridge to the highpoint. I moved as fast as possible because trespassing seems less detrimental the quicker you do it. I spent probably 60 seconds up top snapping a few pictures then it was time to go. Right around Lewiston, I passed a couple from England who were bagging peaks in Utah as well. We chatted for a few minutes before going our separate ways.
Drove to Salt Lake City afterwards for a shower, laundry, Mexican food, and sleep. |
