| no partners | | Rented some snowshoes Wednesday and drove up to Flagstaff on Thursday. I woke up (late) Friday morning to a dead car battery and ditched my plans for Humphreys. After giving myself a jump, I drove up to Snowbowl strictly for the drive. I planned on going back into town for something afterwards, then I saw that I had cell service at Humphreys' parking area. If my jumper were to fail, I'd at least be able to call roadside. With that problem "solved," I decided to head for Dutchman Glade. At the very least I'd get some good snowshoeing and be able to see the glade covered in snow.
I slowly made my way up the north side of the ski slopes and onto the spur to #151. My pace was dragging since I was without breakfast and generally inactive during the weeks leading up to this. I worked my way to the switchback, left the trail, and started heading up. Quite a few ski/snowboard/splitboard trails in the snow. I made it up to the glade proper and continued up. Straight up. I could see the tops of only two or three boulders within a few feet of my path, such a huge contrast from last year when rocks were absolutely unavoidable.
About half way up, I ran into two skiers who were working their way down. I stopped around 10,500ft (guessing - GPS was dead), rested for a minute and took some pictures before starting my run down the glade. All of the elevation gain was undone in a fraction of the time. The snowshoe-ski lifted my spirits and I enjoyed the walk back to the car via the longer way on #151. Third time's the charm, so... |
