| no partners | | We hiked the loop. From the map, Box Camp TH looked like a reasonable place to start this loop, but Sunset may be better. We ran into a lot of locusts and thorns going down to the creek. Once at Sabino Creek, the going was pretty good despite having to cross the heavily flowing stream several times (just after some big rains). Past the gaging station (from the USGS quad, about 523300, 3587000), there is actually a pretty good trail, it is disappears as you get to the steeper section (about a km before the intersection with the Box Springs Tr, which was our intended out pt). However, the terrain forces you left and up, with few options for getting anywhere. One of us took a higher option once and wound up several hundred feet up the slope above us. At that point we were about as far from the Box Camp Tr as we were from the Box Springs Tr, and decided to slug it out going up the steep slope to connect with Box Camp. This part wasn't fun, up slippery slope infested with locusts and thorny bushes with lots of downed trees, quite a blood letting. Tiring day, wouldn't recommend a repeat of our track. Best option may be to take some ropes and canyoneer down to Box Springs tr or go all the way down to Hutch's Pool (that has to be real long day). We may try this sometime when there is less water in the creek. |
