After having spent the night at Yaxha we headed out to the baddest of all the Mayan sites in the region. Tikal National Park in Guatemala was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979 and was used on the first Star Wars movie and has been visited by many millions of people worldwide.
After having arrived via mini bus at a little past 10AM we met with my parents who where already waiting for us near the visitor center.
We immediately followed the main trail leading up to the Main plaza which leads to Temple I (The great jaguar) and Temple II (Of the masks), Steph and I left our backpacks with my parents and went and explored many of the pyramidal structures.....if you come to any Mayan sites be prepared to do lots of step climbing to the top of the structures.
Thankfully my parents had brought bread, ham and fruit juice as we were starving, after having had some lunch we left and explored more of this endless site and headed over to temples III and IV, took our time checking out many of the smaller plazas in between.
Started climbing to the top of temple IV (The two headed snake) where a scene of Star Wars was filmed and hung out at the top for about 30 minutes before heading back down and head to the Lost World complex. At this place i found a faint trail that had no signs to be part of the main trail system open to visitors....we come to find out its an arqueologist trail leading to a small investigation dig, fortunately for us there were no people around and found something under investigation that normal visitors wont get to see.....being there by ourselves in the dense jungle i started feeling this Indiana Jones part of me come to life.
Stumbling across this beautiful carved mask measuring 7x7 feet made my entire day, i took many pictures of all its detail, and many of its still original red stucco which was over 1000 years old. After this we decided to continue following the trail but left to nowhere and turned back around, after about a 20 minute walk back we returned to the mail area open to the public and continued to plaza of the 7 temples, and then headed over to Temple V which we had to ourselves. Along the way we were kept watch by many spider monkeys up on the forest canopy.
Being that 5PM was getting close we headed back to the park entrance to take the last mini bus out to Flores but not before coming across a family of Coatimundis. Once in the town of Flores the mini bus left us at the bus terminal and grabbed some delicious street food, in which a three meat plate of grilled meat greatness accompanied by cole slaw, black beans, rice and tortillas only cost Q30 quetzales per person (about $3.75).
We then took the next overnight bus back to Guatemala City.
