The day after having comed back from Acatenango Volcano the next volcano hike was Agua volcano near Antigua Guatemala. The night before my cousin had joined me and made plans to tackle Agua (12,340) from its Santa Maria de Jesus route. In recent times the lower slopes of this volcano have been marred with robberies of hikers by local criminals but for a while now the town set up a Q20 ($2.25) entrance fee that covers guided security up to the first rest area of the volcano, no robberies have been reported past that point.
The hike starts from the town square in which we were led by one of the local guides, my cousin a half marathon runner didn't take too kindly of the gentle slope and almost immediately started to struggle. It was actually kinda comical i thought, i asked him if it was harder to run or to go up a mountain.....he answered the latter!
Once we reached the first rest area, he decided to stay with the guide and wait for me to go up and down the volcano. I quickly grabbed the essentials and put them in the daypack and off i went on my own. The trail was easy to follow. Certain sections allong the way were quite muddy from all the donkey/horse traffic up the summit carrying supplies for the refuge being built there.
it was 945AM and my goal was to reach the summit no later than noon and at 1155AM i reached the crater rim. All the communications towers installed made it a very unimpressive summit to reach. There was also a lot of garbage left behind by other climbers that made me quite angry and sad at the same time.
I spent about 15 minutes taking a few photos and eating some peanuts and started my descent. by 130PM i had met back with the guide and my cousin again and together walked back to town.
I would like to see many improvements made to this magnificent volcano, one that exhibits a great ecosystem but the lack of care and oversight has turned it into an eye sore for climbers who care deeply about nature. I hope the town is able to clean up the mountain and is able to control future hikers' actions on the mountain, litter is easily managed if we all do our part.
