Our original plan was to make it an early start, summit and return back to Phoenix at a decent time but the need to wait til 9AM to get our permits changed all that. We drove early saturday morning and was at the Agazziz lodge past 9AM after getting all our gear ready in the parking lot. There was a ton of people hitting the slopes this morning and we seemed to be the only ones there that werent using the snowbowl. By the time we were trail ready was already 1030, the summit was covered in a mass of thick clouds that was dropping some decent snow at 9500+ feet. The first part of the trail was easy to follow up until the rock slide switchback. From there we started making our way up the steep slide under some nice snowfall, at this point we were blazing our own snow trail, at times knee high deep which made the climb slow and treachorous but enjoyable. After a while we reached the B-24 bomber site, it was half buried in snow, took a few photos, some (3) decided that was enough for them, the others (4) we decided to keep going up until our preset turn around time of 230PM. After all was said and done we had reached the treeline at around 11,600 ft. the snowfall was becoming heavier and didnt want to spend a couple more hours trying to reach the summit in really deep snow. We turned around and made it back in town later that night. Since we all have our permits we will be taking another crack at it in the next few weeks as it was super fun to be around all the snow and the steep slopes! |
