| no partners | | I read about an interesting trail off of the AZT near Prison Camp to the ridges and peaks above on HAZ member's cmiles website hikelemmon.com and decided to check it out. I hiked for about a half mile until I saw an old metal pipe on the left and shortly after took a really well-defined trail off to the left. The path was easy to follow in most places with some patchy snow still clinging to northern faces.
The trail reached a ridgeline that took off to the left, but I continued on the path to the right to a higher saddle. It wound through some attractive rock formations with great views opening up the higher I climbed. At the saddle I hiked down the ridge toward Point 4891 and found a spot that overlooked Soldier Canyon. The views from here were fantastic and I spent a bit of time playing with my new camera. So much to learn!
After a while, I decided to head back so that I could catch the sunset at Shreve Saddle. I hiked to the smaller peak above the saddle and enjoyed the views. There was still patches of ice and snow on the trail as I hiked back. I liked this area and will come back to explore more.
Instead of driving straight home I went up the mountain to try out long exposures of the moonrise, and then to Molino Basin for some more night shots. It was a great day on the mountain- it's unusual for me to go hiking without any specific destination in mind and I had a lot of fun just exploring around. |
