| no partners | | Intrigued by this area I went back for another dose taking advantage of rwstorm's directions for access from the north. I won't repeat those directions here (though it appears to be perfectly legal) because I'm not sure how safe it is. Bad guys probably also use this road. I saw only one other vehicle all day - a pick-up truck glimpsed through the trees of Greene Wash heading toward me. I slowed down in anticipation of the normal single track passing protocol but he disappeared...though I eventually saw him backed several hundred feet off the main track - sort of odd.
Anyway the road is perfectly passable in a Subaru and fun driving through this scenic deserted area. Before getting to my starting point the road passed by a rocky bump - a likely spot for petroglyphs, and indeed some were there.
The hike was a short (but slow) loop in the north-central part of the Sawtooth range. I expected both less ancient cultural indicators (further from water) and less illegal spotter trash (further from the main N-S routes) than the loop I did to the east last weekend. I was right on both counts but unfortunately I saw almost no cultural signs (not a single piece of pottery!) while there was still a fair amount of trash on the ridges and the flats.
But the hiking on some ridge lines was fun with nice views and I decided to head up one of the high points (2417) which gets few visitors. Heck the whole area gets few recreation-oriented visitors.
Once I finished the loop I drove south thinking (but not positive) that I could find an exit that way. Again nice driving - not very rocky - but with quite a few pinstriping opportunities. There are a lot of branches/forks but I mainly took the busier looking one. When I cleared the hills and took a fork to the east I passed another rocky bump which also had petroglyphs on the south side - I took some pictures.
This fork ended at a gate which let me into a cotton field. I crossed my fingers and there was no problem taking it east to Sunland Gin. As I headed north I noticed the cable that had locked me in last weekend was down. Another fun Saturday... |
