| no partners | | A post last week reminded me there are ruins worth visiting near New River. A couple of them are pretty well known with descriptions available on HAZ but there are others, visible in satellite pictures, that I don't know anything about.
I headed up to New River with low expectations on this overcast day: probably private property issues and possibly vandalism since there are a lot of jeep roads and close proximity to town. First challenge was to navigate the back roads of New River to find my planned starting point. I parked near a house and started walking a jeep road before angling cross country up a low ridge. It was raining and I got pretty wet.
I was surprised to run across some pottery pieces and obvious ruins much sooner than I expected. On the long low ridge I was walking these habitation signs continued for quite a ways. Eventually I came to the target ruin (visible in the satellite view) and was impressed with the massive walls and large perimeter. There were more walls inside, so I'm thinking this was one of Arizona's earliest gated communities.
Nice to find such an interesting place so close to town! |
