| no partners | | I've walked all over Perry Mesa the last couple years but when I plotted the tracks recently http://hikearizona.com/photo=460442 I noticed there was a big hole in the middle. So I thought it would be worth a trip connecting the low hilltops in the mesa center to see what was there.
Turned out it is a lot of grass.
The walking wasn't too bad: sure plenty of hidden prickly pears and ankle busting rocks, but overall OK. I found scattered pottery all along the loop, quite a few agave nurseries (small stones on top of big ones), but only lucked into some petroglyphs on an isolated rock outcrop near the end. One place had a local concentration of pottery pieces and some cleared areas and probably was a habitation site, but I couldn't identify any stacked walls. Most of the hills had rock piles on top and more pottery than the flats but it was not clear that any of the rocks were stacked by people.
Pretty nice walk that convinced me the Perry Mesans indeed preferred the edge. |
