With the exception of the Promontory trail, this was all new trail today. Horton Creek is a gem. I can see why it's so popular. This section of Highline seems like the other sections I've been on: roller coaster all the way. Took Promontory trail to the top for some added AEG. That trail is steep. Only 3/4 of a mile is a tease. They should mention the 1100 feet, too!
Walked along the rim on Promontory Butte for a spell. Way too windy on top today. Had to fasten my hat to my pack to keep from losing it. I was planning on having lunch near one of the outcroppings to enjoy the views, but I would not have enjoyed it with the wind. I headed inland instead, then back towards the Promontory trail. I stopped not far from the trail to have lunch and a break, then headed back down to Highline.
The remainder of Highline and Derrick went by fast and I finished before I expected. That's always a nice surprise. This was a most enjoyable hike, in spite of the wind on top. Omit the Promontory trail and this is a solid loop hike.
Just as I was walking down the hill to my car, Nighthiker was driving up towards the campground, noticed I was wearing HAZ attire and stopped to say hello. Nice meeting you! |
