Since Vern really struggled on the High Trail and was keenly aware of the challenge that the JMT presented for the return trip, we agreed to take separate route back to Agnew Meadows. He took the River Trail, which is almost all downhill and I took the JMT to the Shadow Creek Trail to the River Trail to the PCT.

As is typically the case, I went out a little too fast. That is not usually a problem when I have a day pack, but is a problem with more than 40 pounds on my back. The weight didn’t really become an issue until the downhill from Garnet Lake to Shadow Lake. My knees were screaming at me with all of the tall step downs along the trail. I reached a nice shady log at Shadow Lake and sat for a long break and snack.

While at Shadow Lake I decided check my water bag and discovered that I had already drank 80 ounces of water. I filled my bag back up with filter water from Shadow Lake – very tasty. By the end of the hike I had consumed 150 ounces of water. I guess I needed some electrolytes.

On my ascent out of the value toward Agnew Meadows a very long mule train caught up to me. I had to break for 10 minutes to let them pass. I made it back to my 4Runner about an hour and a half after Vern. He kept himself occupied by consuming the remainder of our Bourbon. Thanks Vern… At least I was driving.

All in all the trip to Thousand Island Lake was awesome and I will do it again.
