FALLS DAY. Day 9 of our nearly 2000 mile road trip.

The first of three falls for the day along the Rogue-Umpqua National Scenic Byway 138:
Finally I get to do a little hiking other than in and out of the car, up to a few lighthouses and at the many stops we did on our 10 day road trip plus one beach walk. We stopped outside of Roseburg to get a sandwich to eat later. We had just driven from Bandon, Oregon (117 mi) on the coast that included a stop at The Colliding Rivers, the name of the confluence of Little River into the North Umpqua River. Once arriving at our destination, the parking on the Falls side of the road was full so went across the way to park and eat our lunch on a picnic table at Susan Creek Recreation area. Here we had a view to the North Umpqua River which we observed for a bit after lunch.

We drove back across the way and started our hike for Susan Creek Falls. Unfortunately, the interpretive part was not set up yet or was under reconstructions (poles with numbers to go with a map). This is a nice leisurely hike on a pretty wide path. The trails wind through old-growth forests of Douglas-fir, hemlock, and sugar pine, with trees often over six feet in diameter. It's just so green and lush. We started to hear the water and then as you come around a corner you can barely see Susan Creek Falls. Surprisingly there was a picnic table here which would have been an even cooler place for lunch.

You walk over a foot bridge to access the other side of the creek so that you can get a closer view of the 50-foot veil-like waterfall plunging over moss-lined rock cliffs :) . There were probably about 6-8 other people here. I can only imagine the amount of people during prime season. I got my pictures and videos before we enjoyed our walk back to the car.

Some video for you: https://youtu.be/wM7RO... All of my videos from the West Coast road trip include some pictures mixed in with the video.

For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.
