| no partners | | Looking to get out of town and out of the heat I went back to Chavez Pass. This is the site of (apparently) the largest Hohokam-era pueblo [ photo ] and I figured I could walk a loop that avoided my previous one and still find interesting stuff.
There certainly is plenty of pottery and after my recent trips to ruins on Anderson Mesa I was better at spotting the interesting pieces. I skirted the edges of the main ruin, the top of the the hill to the north, and a small shelf still further north. There was plenty of pottery all the way and a couple small ruins.
I went up to the higher ridge angling toward a rocky area I'd noticed on the satellite view. 90+% of the time this takes you to lichen-covered scree but this time I lucked out and found some nice petroglyphs up there - there was even some pottery pieces on the ridge top. I continued back along the ridge and down to the creek south of the main ruin. There was a bit of water in the creek and pottery could be found even down there in some places - also a couple rock alignments which might have been rooms.
Enjoyable trip marred by an encounter with a speed trap on the way back where the Beeline enters town near McDowell Rd. |
