I came across some excellent HAZ posts by Rob, Randal, and Belladonna about the south end of PFNP (the "Flattops area") and decided that was the place to go. It's off-trail, seldom visited, and there are plenty of interesting things to see.
Nice walking through the open country and we ran across beaucoup petroglyphs and pottery sherds. I'm pretty sure I could do another dozen fun loops through the area. It was a little hotter than expected (95°) so we didn't overdo it. Surprisingly, muddy washes criss-cross the desert here and there are even a few vaguely riparian spots. Saw four pronghorns in the distance heading away from us.
First good thing I noticed about getting old: a $10 pass gets me into the National Parks for free from hear on out. |
