All the participants had a chance for field work or field experience either on Scottsdale Community College campus (CNUW or Native Seed greenhouse) OR out in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. We opted for the geology hike with leaders Brian Gootee azgs.az.gov/profile ... html and Dr. Ron Rutowski (ASU professor insects rutowski.lab.asu.ed ... html . I think @SunRay went on the hike at Brown's Ranch.
This hike ranks up there with the BEST of my entire 2015 year!!! Brian Gootee ** DISCOVERED ** Marcus Landslide as a rock avalanche/landslide back in 2003/2004. So I got to walk next to him on this hike and ask him a whole bunch of questions and hear first hand how he figured it out and went about publishing it, etc. He is a normal guy and has young kids - - he is a good speaker and knows how to dumb things down for general public. I got him to agree to speak at 2016-2017 MSC Family Sonoran Sunday geology event.
I took all kinds of notes on my iPhone as we did the hike - and I tried not to act too stalker-ish. But I couldn't help myself! I was so proud to tell him that I had written up ML hike description for HAZ and that I used (and referenced) his old power point presentation for the info in my write up. The importance of my write up was a little lost on him but maybe one day he will look it up.
Dr. Rutowski showed us host plants for butterflies and connected the geology to the soil and thus plants and thus insects. Such a nerd hike!!!!!! I was in hog heaven
Caroline is a fast hiker and she was right up there at the front of the pack for the hike! |
