New Years day was here a hike was planned. Part of the New Year's plans for 2016 included getting out on some new trails. I had never been on the 2nd water trail, I've been to the trailhead and we have gone a ways out on Dutchman, but never the other direction. We had 5 in our group, got there before the crowds and headed out. The plan was to go to where it meets up with Boulder Canyon Trail and then come back. Seemed easy enough, but... we took a wrong turn. As we go further out to the end of Garden Valley I kept thinking, I feel like we are headed in the wrong direction. We discussed it and thought it probably turns just up ahead. We found a nice spot 3 miles out and decided that would be our snack break/turn around spot. There were other people on the trail so I figured we were right, but I still kept looking around trying to figure things out. The place we stopped at was a fork in the road, and some people came by and went left, that made no sense at all to me, but we were headed back anyway.

On the way back in garden Valley, I found a fork that went off into what seemed like the correct direction. We all stopped and talked about it but we kept heading back anyway. From the Black Mesa junction back to the parking lot the trail was very busy now. When we got back to the parking lot, we saw the same group that had passed us at our rest stop coming up the road. The trail they took must have looped back to the parking lot.

Now that I am at home and reviewing my GPS log I clearing see what went wrong, we went left instead of right at the spot in Garden Valley we noticed on the way out. I take the blame as I was running the Go Pro and focusing on it, rather than where we were going. We ended up to the left of Hackberry Mesa, instead of the right. Still very scenic and enjoyable and a nice hike though. So I have a question, I can't find the trail we were on on any maps I search online. Does it have a name? at the fork that it loops back to the parking lot, what happens if you go right?
