| partners | | Wow! What a fun, great hike. This was my first trip to Battleship and I was impressed with the fantastic views and the significant class 3 scrambling need to get there. The six us left Saddlebrooke at 7:00 a.m. and got back at 7:00 p.m., but we had great weather.
Somehow, I figured it would be easier because of the sheer numbers of people that successfully complete it. Now I understand that the completion numbers are high because of the large number of hikers that attempt. It's not easy, but this special hike should be on everyone must-do list.
I downloaded the official track and have two suggestions. I suggest that you don't follow it religiously. When you are looking for the turnoff to start up the slope from the Boulder Canyon Trail, look for the large cairn on the left of the trail (about 150 feet short of the turn shown on the official) and start across the wash and up the slope. If you turn here, there is a pretty clear trail nearly all the way up. One other point, try to get on top of the ridge as soon as you can instead of following the offical track along the east side of the ridge. According to one of our group, who had attempted it twice before, that side is a murderous bushwhack.
Hiking doesn't get much better than this, but anyone who dislikes exposure to heights probably shouldn't attempt it. |
