Garden Valley Loop from First Water TH Clockwise

There was a slight chill in the air as I parked my truck in the First Water TH parking lot, but it felt good and there was no one else around as I signed in on the log book at 5:55 am. I got HAZ tracks up and running then headed back down the dirt road to the trail leading down to the old corral site along the First Water Creek. Surprisingly there was a slight flow to the creek and the magical sounds of gurgling water could easily be heard at this early hour. :D

I crossed the creek and headed East towards the dark outline of Hackberry Mesa in the distance. The sky had a heavy overcast which delayed the oncoming daylight and was blocking any hopes of getting some sunrise shots so I made good time crossing the basin. Once on the far side, the trail began its gradual climb to the saddle where the trail splits, offering you choices between Hackberry Spring and Garden Valley. I continued on the uphill trail, stopping often to just listen to the singing birds breaking the morning's silence.

The sandy trail through Garden Valley was lined with Jumping Cholla, Hedgehog, Staghorn Cholla and Prickly Pear all blooming now that Spring has finally sprung. I hiked over to the West side of the Garden and sat on a large flat boulder that has the best view of the Basin below me and had a quiet snack. Before long, the silence was broken by the sounds of noisy hikers approaching so I got my gear back on and hit the trails back to the Trailhead at First Water.

All the desert cacti, with the exception of the Saguaro, are blooming now.
