I had been wanting to check out this road for some time. Hiking up the road was a nice experience for me, not my usual route finding experience on a trail that was abandoned 20 years ago. The occasional openings in the trees allowed for some good views of the area, and of course, the typical Pinaleno meadows are always a treat. I kept going up the road, waiting for the elevation on my gps to hit 9800 feet. I was keeping an eye out for the squirrel Refugium boundary sign, too. I saw one guy hiking down, he looked exhausted and didn't have much to say. I never got to 9800 feet on my gps, nor did I see a Refugium closure sign. So I pulled out my topo map for a look. Hmmm... I'm at 9800 feet...I'd better turn around! And so I did. On the way down, I noticed the blank wooden signs at about 9770 foot elevation. Maybe this was the marker sign.
The thunderstorm that had been in the vicinity was getting closer now, with louder cracks of thunder. I made a quick retreat down the road to a little safer area, enjoying the wildflowers and cool mountain air.
I was soon back at my truck. At which point I thought, "Hey its only 5:20 pm, I've got time to explore some more!" |
