After hiking along Hart Prairie, and Bismarck Lake in particular, we made our way south from Hwy 180 past Kendrick Peak and onto Government Prairie. Passed 2 of the largest elk herds I've ever seen, one with 25+ and another with 35+ animals. Deer were everywhere as well. We were startled by our timid springer spaniel pup when he let instinct get the better of him and he started to "hunt" some of the deer. His muffled, threatening "barks" were hilarious!
We intended to make our way west along the historic wagon road to Laws Spring but couldn't seem to stay on the correct trail as we consistently found the trail/forest road veered off to the south or doubled back to the east.
Finding a map that actually has the Beale Wagon Road indicated has eluded me. I've sent requests to the Kaibab FS and they have so far gone unanswered. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who can help... |
