At first I intended to only hike about a mile and a half and turn back, but the trail kept luring me on as I had flashbacks to last summer. A mile and a half turned into two, then to three, and then I figured if I made it this far I might as well keep going until I got to a place worthy of calling a destination to turn around at.
Gudy's Rest is a overlook on the trail 4 miles from the end (or beginning if you go North Bound) that has a bench which overlooks Durango. Traditionally, this is where thru-hikers take their last break before making the final push into Durango.
The smells, the foliage, the babbling brook (Junction Creek), and the general atmosphere of the trail instantly took me back to last summer and increased my hype level for this summer quite a bit.
At Gudy's Rest I met a fellow who was camped not far up the trail. We chatted for a bit before it started to rain. He headed back for his tent and I headed back down the trail. |
